Local SEO & Google Maps

Local SEO and Google Maps: own the map before you chase the country.

Most local businesses lose the sale in the three-result Map Pack, before anyone reaches a website. We fix the profile, the proximity signals, and the review engine that decide who appears there.

The short answer

Local SEO is the work of making a business the obvious answer to a search with geographic intent, such as plumber near me, bakery Renton, marketing agency Renton WA. Roughly a third of Map Pack ranking influence comes from the Google Business Profile itself, which makes it the highest-leverage surface most businesses never properly configure.

branad runs local SEO for businesses in Renton and the surrounding King County cities: profile buildout, category strategy, citation cleanup, review generation, and location pages that carry content specific enough to justify existing.

The city-level detail, neighborhood coverage, geo grid tracking, and what we target first, is on our Renton SEO page.

What we actually do

Local SEO has an unusual property: the highest-impact work is concentrated in a small number of fields, and most businesses have never touched them. Before writing a single page of content, we work through the surfaces that carry the most weight.

Google Business Profile, properly built

The primary category is the single most consequential field on the profile. Choosing Marketing Agency over Internet Marketing Service, or Pizza Restaurant over Restaurant, changes which searches the profile is eligible for at all. We select the primary category against what the businesses currently ranking in your city use, then layer five to ten secondary categories to widen eligibility without diluting the primary.

Underneath that: services populated with descriptions that use the language customers actually search, twenty to thirty photos with meaningful filenames, seeded questions and answers, correct hours including holiday hours, and products where the category supports them. For service-area businesses we hide the address and configure the cities served, which is the correct and non-obvious setup.

Citation foundation and NAP consistency

Your name, address, and phone number need to match across every directory that carries them. Inconsistency is common and quietly expensive: an old suite number on one aggregator, a disconnected phone on another. We run a one-time foundational build through the data aggregators and the directories that matter in Washington, then a consistency sweep across what already exists.

Reviews as a system, not a campaign

Review generation fails when it depends on someone remembering to ask. We build it into the operation: a trigger after service completion, a short link, a follow-up, and a response protocol so every review gets a reply. Recency outweighs total count in current weighting, which means the goal is a durable monthly flow rather than a one-time push.

Location relevance on the site itself

On-page signals are the second-largest input after the profile. That means the city has to appear where it counts (title, heading, body copy, schema), and the page has to contain something genuinely local. We do not build a matrix of near-identical city pages. The rule we hold ourselves to is simple: a location page ships only if it contains something that could not appear on any other location page.

Why Renton first

Renton is winnable in a way Seattle is not. Search marketing agency Renton today and several of the top organic results are programmatic location pages published by agencies headquartered in other states, with no local profile, no local reviews, and no local proof. Those pages are ranking on domain authority alone. They are beatable by a business that is actually in Renton and does the local work properly.

Seattle is a different problem. The top of that SERP is held by directories such as Clutch, Expertise and Yelp, and by agencies with twenty years of accumulated authority. The realistic path into Seattle runs through Renton, Kent, Tukwila, and Bellevue first, accumulating the authority and review base that makes a Seattle push credible.

What we measure

Rankings alone are a vanity metric in local search, because rank varies by where the searcher is standing. We track a geo grid instead: position across a matrix of points around your location, so you can see the actual radius where you win. Alongside it, the numbers that pay: calls, direction requests, website clicks, and booked jobs, pulled from Google Business Profile Insights and call tracking rather than estimated.

How it runs

From audit to steady state.

Audit and baseline

Profile state, category analysis against current top-three competitors, citation footprint, review gap, on-page location relevance, and a geo grid scan so we know the starting radius before anything changes.

Profile rebuild

Primary and secondary categories, services, photos, hours, seeded Q&A, service-area configuration. This is the highest-leverage block of work and it happens first.

Citation and consistency pass

Foundational directory build, data aggregator submissions, duplicate suppression, and a NAP sweep across everything that already references the business.

On-page location relevance

Titles, headings, body copy, and LocalBusiness schema carrying the city and service area. Location pages only where genuinely differentiated content exists.

Review engine

Request trigger, short link, follow-up sequence, and a response protocol. Built to run monthly without anyone remembering to run it.

Monthly cadence

Fresh profile posts, new photos, review responses, a geo grid re-scan, and a written read on what moved and what we are changing next month.

Questions

Straight answers.

How long does local SEO take to work in Renton?

For a business in Renton with a verified Google Business Profile and no penalties, expect the first measurable Map Pack movement in 30 to 60 days, and meaningful position changes for competitive terms in 3 to 6 months. Renton is a materially easier market than Seattle: several of the pages currently ranking for Renton searches belong to agencies based in Georgia and Pennsylvania with no local presence at all. Displacing an out-of-market page is faster than displacing an established local competitor.

If the profile is not appearing at all rather than ranking poorly, the diagnostic order is set out in why is my business not showing up on Google Maps.

Timelines stretch when the profile is unverified, when the business has a thin or inconsistent citation footprint, or when review volume is far behind the businesses already ranking.

What actually determines Map Pack ranking?

Published industry studies consistently put Google Business Profile signals as the largest single input at roughly a third of the weighting, followed by on-page signals, reviews, links, behavioral signals, and citations. Proximity to the searcher sits underneath all of it and cannot be optimized away.

These are correlation studies, not confirmed by Google, so treat them as directional. In practice the order of operations that works is: fix the profile first, fix on-page location relevance second, then build reviews and citations on an ongoing cadence.

Do I need a physical address to rank on Google Maps?

You need a real address Google can verify, but you do not need to display it. If you serve customers at their location rather than yours, you configure a service-area business: the address stays hidden and you define the cities you serve. This is the correct setup for contractors, mobile services, and agencies. Displaying an address you do not actually operate from is a suspension risk.

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

The usual causes, in order of how often we find them: the profile is unverified or suspended; the primary category is wrong; the business is outside the searcher's proximity radius and has nothing else strong enough to overcome it; the name, address, and phone number are inconsistent across the web; or there is a duplicate listing splitting the signal.

Diagnosis order matters. Checking category and verification status takes ten minutes and resolves a large share of cases before any paid work starts.

How many reviews do I need?

Enough to sit inside the range of the businesses already ranking in your category and city, which usually means matching the median of the current top three rather than chasing the leader. Recency now carries more weight than raw total, so a steady flow of a few reviews a month outperforms a burst of thirty followed by silence. Review velocity is one of the few local ranking inputs a business can move on its own.
